Northland Makes It 6 Straight
By The Columbus Dispatch
The City League championship game yesterday, featuring two of the state’s top five Division I teams, wasn’t all that it was supposed to be. Northland made sure of that with a fiery second-half defensive effort that left Walnut Ridge flat on its feet.
Although the new-look Vikings under first-year coach Sean Taylor are better known for an up-tempo style, their hard-nosed defense was most responsible for carving out a somewhat ragged 66-55 victory before a capacity crowd at East. It marked a record sixth straight City title for Northland.
There were nine lead changes in the first half, but Northland used a 13-1 run in the third quarter to take command.
“In the first half, we were too tentative because we were trying to avoid foul trouble,” said Devon Scott, a 6-foot-8 senior center. “In the second half, we were determined to play our style. We challenged ourselves to show a little pride in our defense and not let them get rebounds and second-chance points. From there, everything else fell into place.”
Added Scott’s 6-8 bookend, Jalen Robinson: “You’ve heard the old saying, ‘Defense wins championships?’ Our old coach (Satch Sullinger) used to say that all the time. That held true today.”
The second-half scenario became all too familiar: Unable or unwilling to run any semblance of set plays, Walnut Ridge settled for hurried jump shots and one-on-one moves. In turn, Northland dominated the glass, sprinted downcourt in transition and got easier scoring opportunities. A snowball effect ensued, presenting a big advantage for the top-ranked Vikings (19-1).
Scott was the chief beneficiary, finishing with 23 points and seven rebounds. Robinson added 14 points and 11 rebounds. Both were defensive forces, blocking shots and swatting away interior passes. The Dayton-bound tag team also assisted each other on several high-low plays.

JJHuddle Boys Basketball Power Poll: Week 10
In Division 1 Columbus Northland still stands at the top of the state at 16-1. City League rival Columbus Walnut Ridge is right behind at #2 with a record of 16-0. These two teams will square off in the City League Championship next Saturday, Feb. 18th, to settle the battle of the city. Northland is heavily favored having won the past 5 city championships.
One team that might stand out because of their record is Lakewood St. Edward at #6 with a record of 10-6. Don't let their record fool you, they made it a point this year to play all the top team around the state. Even taking on some out of state teams such as Huntington Prep from WV.
In Division 2 the very talented Dayton Dunbar still stands alone at the top with a record of 17-0. Cincy Taft comes in at #2 with a record of 12-4 and Franklin is right behind them at #3 with a record of 15-0.
Below is the link to JJHuddle to check out the top ten from all four divisions along with other notable teams to watch in that division.

Walnut Ridge's size counters Africentric's speed
From the Columbus Dispatch
In Africentric’s sauna-like cracker box of a gymnasium, crowd noise projects to heavy-metal-concert levels, and 6-foot-9 basketball players look like giants.
For the better part of a City League South Division showdown last night, the host Nubians used their quickness to trap the wings, steal the ball and sprint down the short court for easy baskets.
But down the stretch, Walnut Ridge’s space-eating big men proved too much to handle on both ends of the floor, and the Scots surged late for a 51-42 victory. They earn a rematch against Northland in the City championship game on Feb. 18 at East.
“The strength we had over them was our bigs, and that turned out to be the difference with the game on the line,” Walnut Ridge coach Jason Bates said after improving his record to 7-1 against his brother, Michael, the Africentric coach.
“During our surge in the fourth quarter, our guards did a great job beating their initial pressure and getting it over the top, and we were making the extra pass to get it to those guys for easy baskets. The big guys also played a big, big role in our defense stepping up at the end, too. Nobody wants to shoot over those long arms.”
Africentric (15-3, 11-2) managed only one field goal and four points in the final six minutes.
The Nubians led 39-38 when Alassane Kah and Malik Dime, 6-9 bookends from Senegal, delivered back-to-back dunks to spur an 8-0 run for the Scots (17-0, 13-0). Both dunks, and the next basket, by 6-7 Kai Turner on an assist by Dime, resulted from nifty interior passes.
